Age related: Palatal expansion requires opening the 9 sutures where the 2 halves of the upper jaw (maxilla) contact other bones in the skull. By Age 29 those sutures have long ago fused together. While teeth and their supporting (alveolar) bone can be reconfigured to some extent, true skeletal expansion requires surgically disconnecting the jaw bone before expansion.
