The upper jaw width: A palate expander, also known as a "butterfly", is used to accomplish rapid palatal expansion in a child who has not finished growing. As a result, the upper jaw is wider, eliminating a potential cross bite and creating more room in the upper dental arch for the upper teeth, hopefully to avoid the need to extract normal healthy teeth. It should be performed by a trained orthodontist.

Upper jaw: When the upper jaw is normalized to the width of a lower with an expander, you will notice a less constricted archform and allow for better development of the teeth. Additionally, it will have the potential to open the nasal airway to improve breathing. All good things!

Lots: Palatal expander used to correct width if upper jaw narrower than lower jaw. Also corrects posterior cross bite (tip teeth inside bottom teeth, increases upper arch length (making more room for the teeth, and can result in more favorable broader smile.
