Can use medication: Depending on if the thyroid is diffusely enlarged or if there is a nodule producing the excess thyroid or if the pituitary gland is causing there are several treatment options and not all require surgery. For surgery in the neck the surgeon has to identify and protect the laryngeal nerve to prevent affecting the patient's voice quality. This is not be difficult for an experienced surgeon.
