History: these codes are compiled by the symptoms of millions of patients. The diagnostic codes are created around a constellation of symptoms by doing it this way the risk of mis diagnosis is lessened. More than one source: Proof is s strong word. However, what is included in the DSM is based on careful consideration of advances in research as well as the collective knowledge of individuals working in the field. Having said this, knowledge about conditions can evolve at different rates; therefore, some categories are more reliable and/or valid than others. This is the purpose of ongoing research/input from the field.
