Bumps: Hard to say without seeing but may be a neuralgia or even shingles. Have it checked by a neurologist

Viral reaction: This sounds like it may be recurrent shingles otherwise known as herpes zoster. There are meds to take for this to decrease the duration and intensity of the pain, but there is no cure for shingles.
