Acid in the esophagu: GERD is short for gastroesphogeal reflux disease. It's due for the most part to acid from your stomach splashing up into the esophagus. There are several OTC as well as prescription products to treat it. There are several non medicinal treatments like not eating for a few hours prior to going to bed, not wearing tight restrictive clothes, avoid chocolate and others. Try Prilosec OTC

Doctor Consult.: Lower pressure on the 'LES' 'sphincter that keeps stuff on stomach', acid goes up. Loose belt, elevated headrest on bed, no peppermints, or chocolates. Acid reducers like Omeprazole or zantac, (ranitidine) usually prescribed. No large meals, don't eat 3 hours before going to bed. See your doctor :)
