Facilitates oxygen: release from Red Cells. 2-3 DPG is normally higher in women and they normally have lower hemoglobin. Higher 2-3 DPG facilitates release of oxygen form hemoglobin. In a normal person oxygen saturation at about 100% and "raising" 2-3 DPG will not make a difference.

2,3 DPG increase: 2,3 DPG acts in red blood cells to stabilize the low oxygen affinity state. Thus, it aids in the hemoglobin in unloading oxygen when it gets near cells that need oxygen. It can be increased due to anemia, long term hypoxia, alkalosis, and hyperthyroidism.
