Try stopping: the metformin and then restarting it at a low dose (500 mg twice a day with meals) and slowly increase at weekly intervals. If you still have problems, talk w/your doctor about a long-acting metformin such as Glumetza which only rarely causes gi distress,

Probable side effect: There are several manufacturers of generic metformin. The tablets are made differently and some may dissolve more rapidly, causing side effects. extended release metformin often reduces side effects. this requires a new prescription.
