Why is trying to lower a moderate fever counterproductive to the body's attempt to fight off an infection?

Fever: The body's response to inflammation/infection is to raise the temperature, which helps to fight some organisms. Lowering it without a good reason would remove that potential benefit. There are very few reasons why it is essential to reduce fever.
