No, but...: Mastitis is never normal. However, any time a foreign object (needle) is placed into the breast, infection is a possible complication. You should continue nursing as often as possible to empty the breast and take antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor.

There is a slight: chance of infection following breast needle biopsies(and any procedure puncturing the skin), probably less than 1%. It is a known complication, it is not "normal", but unfortunately it occasionally occurs.

Not unusual: Mastitis is not uncommon during breastfeeding. Having had a needle biopsy may add to the potential for developing mastitis. Make sure to see and follow with your health care provider. Antibiotic treatment usually takes care of the problem. However sometimes an invasive intervention may be needed.
