Because of the side: effect profile at higher doses - it seems to be used most often to help sleep now a days (off - label use). Take care.

Weak antidepressaant: At one time Desyrel (trazodone) was widely prescribed for treatment of depression. However, at the effectivedosages for depression, most people could not tolerate Desyrel’s pronounced tendency to cause sedation and drowsiness, especially during the daytime when these side effects interfered with work and daily activities. Generally it effects sleep and but it is only a mild antidepressant.

Trazodone AD: At high doses it can be, but side-effects are intolerable then. One other option is Oleptro, an extended-release Trazodone. Discuss with your doctor.
