You're not abnormal: Irregularity is common & does not necessarily signal abnormality. Average stool pattern in america fits a bell-curve, ranging from 3 movements daily to one every 3-4 days. Try adding fiber (fruits, vegetables, whole grains) or commercial water soluble supplements to "regulate" stools. Raise concern if bleeding, weight loss, localizing abdominal pain or a personal/family history of colitis, cancer.

Avoid laxatives: The laxative industry has promoted for years the misconception that everyone should have a bowel movement every day. Each individual is unique. Some may have to go two or three times a day. Others may go three or more days without a movement. The warnings signs are these: painfully hard BMs; frequent loose BMs; blood; narrowing of the stool; a sudden change in frequency and/or character of stool.
