If upper abdomen: and directly above the belly button then that would be the mid epigastrium and could be a number of things. True left upper abdominal pain that is intermittant and stabbing is usually bowel spasm but yours sounds different and if it persists or worsens then see your doctor. May be a simple gastritis.
