Depends on you: Decades ago DS infants were abandoned to foundling homes as worthless.Lifespan was short and progress seldom attained. Today kids with DS have an expected lifespan of 60+ yrs, and many can progress enough to gain self help skills, keep a job (with supervision) and enjoy life. The difference is the type of stimulation they get in infancy and childhood.

Early Intervention: Programs in the US began in the '70's & targeted infants & children with Down Syndrome. Outcome studies showed attainment of developmental milestones was achieved significantly earlier than that of age-matched children with DS who had no early intervention. OT & PT help your baby learn the most functional movement possible as well as the best quality of movement possible. Do it now!

Can be a benefit: Children with Down Syndrome are hypotonic - floppy. Looks like weakness but is not. Physical therapy is helpful, giving you direction in exercises and activities that can stimulate motor skills. Early intervention is certainly worth while.
