Yes: I think they are trying to describe an incomplete anal tear. The entire sphincter did not tear but you had a partial. It is also partial for the rectal mucosa to tear underneath the muscle and the muscle not to tear at all. That's why we do a rectal exam after deliveries if there is suspicion of a tear there.
