Often no cause: Spontaneous painful muscle cramps often happen without any detectable cause. Electrolytes imbalance and low Calcium levels in blood are rather uncommon causes of painful cramps. Gentle stretching of the painful muscle along with gentle massage resolves it in few minutes. Some medicines are associated with muscle cramps (like Statins) but they do not cause muscle contraction .
