Is it normal for a baby to squirm and move when he is making a bowel movement?

Yes: The baby is responding to the sensations associated with bowel movements: pressure, sound, wetness, warmth and intestinal movement. The younger the baby, the stranger this seems to him. It may even be disconcerting and scary at first, thus the squirming and grimacing. It's all normal and baby will eventually get used to it.

Yes: Its also normal for your baby to become red in the face and grimace as if s/he is in pain. As long as your baby has soft stool they are not constipated. Remember breastfed babies over a month of age may go up to 10 days or 2 weeks without having a stool and this does not mean they are constipated.
