Frequency and Number: of ECT treatments determined by severity of illness, relative benefits/risks of treatment. Number of treatments, including the usual # for specific psychiatric disorders (e.g. 6-12 treatments for major depression), changes in the course of treatment based upon patient response, treatment modifications based on adverse effects, and requirement for formal assessment of continued need.
