Independent Exam: IME stands for "Independent Medical Examination". Many insurance Co., especially Workmen's Compensation, ask an independent expert Doctor for an opinion if there is an injury, and what treatment is needed. Sometimes is used as a second opinion, or even to see if they are responsable for treating the injury. Ask your IME Doctor what is the purpose of the Exam, even before starting the exam.

Workers comp term: An IME is an Independent Medical Examination. It is often done in workers comp cases to get an outside opinion of whether the injury was actually caused by something at work or another situation entirely. So basically this could determine who pays for your surgery- your workers comp insurance/employer or your own insurance.
