Nebulous: The mucus plug is sort of a nebulous entity. As you start to go into labor and the cervix starts its process of softening, some mucus can be release. All of it might come out at once or it might come out a little at a time.

The mucus protects and prevents anything from traveling up the cervix. 72 hours before labor, your cvx begins to change and the mucus loosens and mixes w/ blood from cervical change until it falls out as a "plug."
