See your dentist: HSV type 1is a conditions that can affect your mouth and cause facial pain while an active lesion is exist. There no cure for HSV infection and often stress is an aggravating factor. Cold sores generally clear up without treatment within 10-14 days. It is your call. See your dentist after 14 days for evaluation if needed.

Probably not herpes: If it is an initial infection it might behave this way. But typical hsv1 is an isolated scab on the lip. If you have extensive gum disease you probably have something else. You need to seek professional help.
