Erythropoiesis: Any form of blood loss will cause your body to work to create more blood cells to replenish the loss. This process is called erythropoiesis. If the bleeding is significant enough or has been going on long enough, it is possible to become iron deficient. Iron deficiency is commonly caused by using up iron stores for red blood cell production but can also be caused by nutritional deficiency.
