Can be a few things: Often we see this happen with temperature changes- usually when outside in the cold and returning inside to the warm. The warmth causes the blood vessels to dilate and fill with oxygenated blood. You can also see this in conditions such as Raynaud's phenomenon or scleroderma. It can also be a sign of infection- typically accompanied by pain, swelling, and warmth.
