Difficult unless...: Unless you have a malunion/deformity of the fracture after it healed not much can be done. Often the cartilage is damaged in addition to the bone injury. Arthroscopic surgery can help clean out the joint if there are loose bone particles or discrete areas of cartilage damage. Xray arthritis and symptomatic arthritis pain are not correlated 1to1 often have no complaints despite changes X-ray

You can't: Once it starts it will progress- sometimes slowly and other times more rapidly- see a fellowship trained foot/ankles specialist if it persists. Try Ibuprofen or other NSAID
