Depends on symptoms: The chest wall (rib cage) can be bruised, and that can hurt for several days. However, sometimes if a blow to the chest is powerful enough, it can damage the lung or heart. If you have sharp pain when taking a breath, or if you have any persistent trouble breathing, or if the pain gets worse when lying down, then seek urgent medical attention.

Chest Contusion: If you can take a deep breath and cough without pain, you have no difficulty breathing, did not pass out and you are not dizzy with no underlying medical problems it is very unlikely that you have anything more than a chest wall contusion.
