Depends: It depends on whether we are talking about spinabifida occulta, meningocele or myelomeningocele. If we are talking about myelomeningocele it depends on how high the lesion is and whether or not there is an arnold-chiari malformation in the brain.

Totally varies: With modern medical care many spina bifida children live well into adulthood, good urologic and neurosurgical care are the keys to survival. Infections from pressure sores should also be minimized by close attention and relieving pressure. Milder sacral or low lumbar level patients will have less issues than high lumbar and thoracic.
