Don't compress: You may have heard the old joke, " Hey doc, it hurts if I do this" and the doctor says " then don't do that!" When you compress the carotid atery, you create turbulence in the vessel. Since it runs close to you ear, you might hear a whooshing sound. It's nothing to be concerned about.
