Losses in urine: It is true that the average level of magnesium is lower in people with diabetes (best measured as mg inside the the red blood cells). There may be many reasons, but one is that high blood sugar leads to excess urine that carries the mg out with it. There is research to suggest that low mg levels contribute to Insulin resistance, and replenishing low mg levels improves Insulin resistance.
