Only one type: Adenocarcinoma of the colon, or colon cancer as it is commonly known, is generally of one type but is often characterized by its location in the colon, and the stage (localized, spread to the outside of the colon, to the lymph nodes, or to other organs}.

Can be several: Although adenocarcinoma is the primary type of colon cancer, one can also get lymphomas, melanomas, smooth muscle tumors of the colon, and carcinoids, to mention a few.
