Possible & unlikely: Symptoms of sunburn and infection certainly overlap. Both are red, swollen, painful and can cause changes in temperature. Multiple diagnoses causing the same symptoms is very common in medicine. The difference is the history. If it happens after unprotected or prolonged sun exposure it's most likely a sunburn. If it is severe, check with your doctor for confirmation.
