It depends: It depends on what they are looking for. Conventional angiography is still considered the 'gold standard'. However, it is invasive. In practice, lower risk non-invasive tests like CT angiography, MR angiography, or sonography can answer most clinical questions.

Ultrasound: Chronic damage to the major blood vessels of the neck (i.e. carotid artery or jugular vein) are best diagnosed with doppler ultrasound. An acute or traumatic injury to the neck may require a CT scan for diagnosis. A catheter angiogram is reserved for people with know vascular problems or neurologic symptoms, such as stroke.
