Anticoagulants: Blood thinners are medicines that prevent clotting. They are given to people who have an abnormal blood clot, or who are at risk of a blood clot from things like artificial heart valves and abnormal heart rhythms (atrial fibrillation). People who are ill in hospital, or undergoing surgery are also at risk for clots and are treated. Drugs include warfarin, heparin, enoxaparin, apixiban & others.
