Definitely not: Tinea versicolor is a completely benign overgrowth of a yeast on your body. When the yeast overgrows, it causes a patchy discoloration of the skin that can be various colors (hence 'versicolor'). Affected skin does not tan well, but the rash itself is not dangerous. You can use over the counter Nizoral (ketoconazole) shampoo applied daily to kill the yeast, although recurrence is common.
