5-6 blocks: My arbitrary limit is – no more than once a month for 6 months, if it really helps control the pain. If the pain returns after 5-6 blocks, I would start looking for other options. Keep in mind – nerve root / epidural blocks are NEVER the first treatment choice in the spinal disc disease & lower back pain.

Sciatica: Cortisone injections for a herniated disc at the L5/S1 level are performed in a series of three spaced over two week intervals. If the pain resolves after one or two injections then it is reasonable to save the third injection for later should a flare up of the pinched nerve recur.

3-4 injections: There are no limits to how many epidural injections you can have. That said repeated steroid based injections put your body at risk for other medical issues down the road. Good rule of thumb is no more than 3 injections in 6 months. If your pain persists after a good physical therapy trial, consider the injections.
