It Varies: Racing heartbeats, or palpitations, may come from a wide variety of conditions. Premature atrial (pacs) or ventricular contractions (pvcs) are common. Supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation/flutter, ventricular tachycardia all can cause a rapid pulse. Sometimes just the normal rhythm going faster than normal may cause a sensation of palpitations.
