Double jointed means: that motion is above what is "normal" it is not really two joints but laxity. Some are born with use joints, others can get a loose joint after an injury. Randomly is unlikely, unrecognized and then noted some time after either born with or injured is more likely . Inflammatory changes can also weaken ligaments and sublux or even dislocated joints occur. Snapping is not "double jointed"
