Why does medical science know so little about mental illness?

Human life's complex: Science advances slowly and 'little' vs 'a lot' is an opinion. Actually there are constant corrections being made all through Medical science now - and other fields of knowledge too. Mental issues combine cognition/emotion/motivation/perception/behavior/biochemistry/genetics/environment/trauma and perhaps more. It's amazing we know what we do! As long as we're humble and caring - we do out best.
