A member asked:

Is chemotherapy used for all cancers?

No.: Chemotherapy is only used for cancers that have a significant chance of having spread outside the organ where they have originated. When we talk about the stage of a cancer, we are usually describing the probability of cancer cells being "elsewhere". Furthermore, before recommending a particular chemotherapeutic agent, we have to be fairly certain that the cancer will be sensitive to that drug.

Only if indicated: Chemo is cancer fighting medicine. There are 3 modalities to treat cancer- surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Some cancer can be treated alone with surgery- especially at a very early stage, or combination with radiation. Some other cancer- requires chemo either before, after surgery , combination with radiation therapy or as the only treatment for cancer. Discuss with your oncologist.
