Why ?: Is there a reason to delay clamping the umbilical cord? If there is a good reason, present it to the hospital staff. However, usually for the well being of all, providers want to take all the required medical steps vice putting things off.

Talk to your doctor: At patient's request cord clamping may be delayed as long as 3 to 5 minutes until pulsations stops (physiologic cord clamping) vs the usual 30 to 60 seconds. As long as your baby does not need immediate intervention that cannot be done with an intact cord it should not be a problem. This may be done while your baby is having skin to skin contact with you. Discuss this with your Obstetric provider.
