Definition: A urologist is a physician who specializes in diseases of the urinary organs in females and the urinary and sex organs in males. A pcp is a primary care physician. If you have urinary symptoms, see your pcp first. If more specialty help is needed, you will be referred to a urologist.

Urology residency: Urologist has 5 years of residency training. Presently, minimum of one year of general surgery, some programs do 2 years, followed by 4 years of urology to become board eligible in urology. A few senior urologists finished after 3 years. Some urologists o on to do fellowships in female, pediatric, urology or uro-oncology etc. Pcp does 3 years of family or general practice or internal medicine.
