Abscess: If you have a fistula, it usually indicates a draining dental abscess. Although very rare nowadays, people have been know to die from a dental abscess. Why take the chance? The tooth needs to be treated regardless. Make the call.

Why take chance?: If you had a severe infection anywhere else in your body wouldn't you treat it aggressively? If infection spreads through blood stream to other organs can do severe damage and, though rare, even death. You need Dental Treatment now, antibiotics alone will not cure a Dental Abscess. Please put down the computer, pick up the phone, and call your Dentist immediately.

Unlikely: A fistula is pus draining from an infection. Before antibiotics, draining an infection was often part of treating the infection. However, treating the source of the infection is ultimately how to get rid of the infection. There is nothing good about having a chronic infection, even if it is draining. Get it treated.

Why Wait?: Fistula is a sign that there is an infection and your body is draining it out. Unlike some other types of infection, a dental chronic abscess will not get better on its own. See your dentist-periodontist for diagnosis and treatment. An infection can become life threatening if left untreated.
