Agree w Dr Seif.: Manic Depression and post traumatic stress disorder are two different mental health conditions. They can co-exist. Having one can make treatment of the other condition more challenging. However, one does not cause the other. Take care.

PTSD and Bipolar: The symptoms of PTSD can sometimes look similar to bipolar disporder in some ways, but they are different. PTSD comes from a traumatic event and Bipolar disorder is more often a genetic disorder that affects brain and other neurological chemistry. However, it is well known that trauma can affect brain and neurological chemistry so that may be why the symptoms look similar in some ways.

Comorbid: Bipolar disorder is often a comorbid diagnosis with PTSD, and no one knows for sure the psychophysiological reasons for this. They simply can co-occur. As a sidebar, what will oftentimes happen if the symptomology is severe enough, presenting symptoms can appear as a serious personality disorder, which is simply not the case.
