A member asked:

Could tetralogy of fallot be due to genetics?

Genetics and TOF: The short answer is yes. TOF is the most common of presenting congenital heart disease and multiple studies have been done trying to determine and isolate various genetic mutations. In a paper published in 2006, 20% of the patients with TOF were identified with genetic mutations.

Define genetic !: Every organ is formed under guidelines contained in genes, so heart formation, normal or otherwise has a genetic component.TOF is one of more than a dozen heart defects arising from erroneous genetic signals. The genetics are rarely direct, with about 4% risk that a TOF patient would have a kid with one of many CHD's, not specifically TOF.Two parents with different CHD's= 8% risk of any type of CHD
