A member asked:

At 49, i am experiencing some perimenopausal symptoms, mostly insomnia. would bio-identical hormones be recommended for that? are they safe?

Bio-identical: Some are OK but others are not. I would not take any estrogen related hormones until you have checked with your gynecologist. Many ads on TV and radio say wonderful things about their product but it is almost always followed by a note "This product is not approved by the FDA". FDA is the group that approves or disapproves new drugs.

No: The American Congress of Ob/GYN recommends against bio-identical hormones since they are not produced in FDA regulated facilities. The sources of the ingredients used can be dangerous and the amount of progesterone needed to protect against the risk of uterine cancer is not known and can vary from batch to batch. Hormones that ARE identical to those a woman naturally produces are available.
