My child is 12 years old and has pink eye. does she need to stay away from school?

Yes: Pink eye is extremely contagious and has been known to cause epidemics in schools. Your child will be contagious until she is free of her symptoms (red, itchy, watering eyes). This may last up to two weeks, and no medication currently exists that can speed up the recovery time. Keep her out of school until she is better, and see an eye doctor.

Pink eye: A child diagnosed with pink eye or bacterial conjunctivitis needs to remain home till 24 hours of antibacterial eye drops. After 24 hours of medication the child will not be contagious and can return to school. During those first 24 hours of treatment at home avoid having the child use a towel or wash cloth that somebody else will use. Handwashing decreases of spreading to others at home.
