A 21-year-old member asked:

is a brain tumor cancer?

There can be benign tumors in the brain like meningioma or acoustic neuroma. These tumors are not malignant, but can cause symptoms and complications, and are often treated with surgery or radiosurgery. There can be malignant tumors in the brain (cancer). These can be metastatic, or be of primary brain origin.
Dr. William Goldie
Pediatric Neurology 48 years experience
Good question: Tumors can be malignant or benign. A benign tumor is one that does not grow rapidly, does not infiltrate normal tissue, and does not metastasize or break off and spread to other parts of the body. However, in the brain a benign tumor can be malignant by position. If the tumor is located deep or in a very sensitive place, it can be very dangerous. Some brain tumors can just be easily cured.

Can cell phones cause cancer, brain tumors, etc?

Dr. Douglas Miller
Pathology 41 years experience
Controversial: There is very little evidence that cell phone usage causes brain tumors. At least one large study in (i think) sweden suggested a slight increase in the frequency of tumors or the 8th (acoustic) nerve in high-use individuals, but showed no increase in other types of brain tumors, including gliomas. Other studies have not even supported that there are more 8th nerve tumors from cell phones.

Variable: Brain tumors present in many different ways. Many cause headaches, some don't. Some cause seizures as a first symptom. Some cause neurologic deficits, such as weakness of one limb or one side of the body, or aphasia (difficulties understanding language or expressing oneself). None of these are specific for brain tumor, other brain disease can also cause these.
A 45-year-old member asked:

Can you tell me if cell phones cause brain cancer/tumors?

Dr. Ed Friedlander
Pathology 44 years experience
No: Somebody may tell you this is "still under study", but this pathologist thinks the idea is just wrong. No theoretical mechanism. You can find that anything causes anything if you do a bad study or ask the wrong questions, especially retrospectively. In one big study, the tumors were more common on the side opposite the cell phone. Stop worrying and enjoy the benefits of today's technology.
A 44-year-old member asked:

How serious is pneumonia and brain tumors to a cancer patient?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Jefferson Chen
Neurosurgery 34 years experience
Both are serious: To clarfy: you are asking whether in a patient with cancer (not of the brain), there is the subsequent finding of pneumonia and brain tumor-is this serious? Certainly, any time there is pneumonia that is serious. If there is finding of brain tumors, that is serious because that suggest metastasis. That is, cancer that had been confined to the primary site (ie breast, colon) has gone to the brain.
