A 38-year-old member asked:

What are the causes of blood pressure to rise when you get up?

Normal physiology: When you get up, your heart beats faster and stronger, and the stroke volume (amount of blood pumped per beat) rises. Also, your involuntary (autonomic) nervous system causes your vessels to constrict. The net effect of all those actions is a normal rise in bp.

Could blood pressure rise in winters?

Perhaps: If like many people you are eating more processed and thus high sodium foods in winter this might be possible. Also we tend to be more sedentary during winter months and may gain some weight leading to a rise in BP.

Are there any herbs that can raise your blood pressure?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Johanna Fricke

Saint John's Wort: Or hypericum is a mild MAO inhibitor that raíses bp. It has to be discontinúed 2 weeks prior to giving a stimulant for adhd to avoid a hypertensive crisis. It can also be a problem if you drink red wine or eat aged cheese. Black licorice can raise BP in some people. Always tell your doctor what herbs, vitamins, etc. You're taking. Natural doesn't always = safe.

Thanks for your answer -- great to be informed. However, there has been only been 1 published case of St. John's Wort raising BP: https://www.thieme-connect.com/DOI/DOI?10.1055/s-2003-38086 In addition, the amount of MAO inhibition is very weak: http://tinyurl.com/lmhnq9z
