A member asked:

Do all general anesthesias require a breathing tube? like arthoscopic shoulder surgery? would it require one under ga

It depends: Many general anesthetics include placement of a breathing tube. This is normally inserted into the windpipe after the patient is asleep and removed just as he wakes up. Not all GA requires one. Other types of airways can be used instead. Shoulder surgery may be done under a nerve block with sedation. The breathing tube is placed for safety when necessary. Talk to your surgeon and anesthesiologist.

Yes!: It's there 4 a couple reasons, to have control of Ur airway @ all times, and B ready 2 control Ur breathing as U R usually paralyzed while under. Much safer @ a must as far as I'm concerned.

Not always required: General Anesthesia implies you are unconscious. Many times pts. can breathe on their own, sometimes they may need assistance, it depends on their Medical and airway presentation. Sometimes Arthroscopic Shoulder surgery can be done primarily under regional anesthesia with just deep sedation.
