Cleans sides: toothbrushing (more importantly, gum brushing) cleans the cheek-side and tongue-side of teeth and gum space. Flossing cleans betwen teeth where a toothbrush doesn't reach. Most decay and bone loss happens in between teeth

Very important: A recent study shows flossing 2Xa day in addition to brushing reduced signs of gum disease by about 40%. It is more beneficial than brushing. Practicing better flossing and brushing habits can usually reverse gingivitis. The secret is that flossing removes plaque and food particles in places where a toothbrush cannot easily reach. Visit your dentist twice a year for a healthy smile.
