It is no less safe: with or without alprazolam, but it kind of misses the point. Buspirone is generally used INSTEAD of and in order to AVOID use of benzodiazepine drugs, like Xanax. Xanax is my least favorite benzo with a very high abuse potential, in large part because it gets in AND out VERY fast, leading to the desire to take more and more. Until the BuSpar (buspirone) kicks in (2-3 weeks) your dr. may be using benzos.
